Why Is My Christmas Tree Dropping Needles?
The Nordmann Fir is known as a non-drop tree, but non-drop doesn't mean no-drop. Every real tree loses some needles. What matters is whether it's a few or a steady shower, and the cause is almost always something you can fix.
What's normal
Expect a few needles when the tree first comes in and while you decorate it, simply from being handled. You may also see some brown needles close to the trunk. Those are older inner needles the tree would have shed anyway, and they're nothing to worry about.
What usually causes heavy needle drop
The stand has run dry
This is the most common cause by a long way. Even a few hours without water lets the cut end of the trunk seal over with sap, and after that the tree can't drink properly.
Too much heat
Radiators, log burners, underfloor heating and sunny windows all dry a tree out quickly. A spot a few feet from the nearest heat source makes a real difference.
Waiting too long without water before going up
If the tree sat in the hall or the garage for a day or two without water before it went into its stand, it will already have started drying out.
The tree wasn't fresh to begin with
A tree cut weeks before you buy it has less life left in it. We cut ours two to three days before delivery for exactly this reason, but it's worth asking wherever you buy.
How to fix it
- Top the stand up with plain water straight away.
- If it has been dry for more than a few hours, take the tree out, cut a thin slice (1–2cm) off the bottom of the trunk, and put it straight back into water. This opens up the cut end so it can drink again. If the tree is already decorated, it's a two-person job, but it's worth doing.
- Move the tree away from radiators and fires if you can, or turn down the radiator nearest to it.
- Check the water every morning from now on.
A tree that has dried out badly won't fully recover, but catching it early usually stops the drop.
Preventing it
Almost all of it comes down to water and position. Use a proper water-holding stand (our guide to Christmas tree stands explains what to look for), fill it the moment the tree goes up, check it daily, and keep the tree away from direct heat. Our care guide covers the rest.
Why the variety matters
Some varieties, like the Norway Spruce, drop needles far more readily once they start drying out. The Nordmann Fir holds on to its needles much better, which is why it's the only tree we sell. You can read more on our Nordmann Fir page.
